The Scoop:

Create a 12” x 12” modern quilt complete with your choice of binding.

Think modern when designing your quilt, ie. minimalism, negative space, and use of colour, to name a few design concepts.

Must be completed by August 15th. All participants will be able to upload their project from July 15th until August 15th at Jackie’s Art Quilts blog (here).

Judging will take place and winners will be announced August 20th. Open to anyone.

This is my entry in the #ModernSummerQuilt challenge.

Not Every Cirlce is Round_Terry Aske Circle Workshop_July 15, 2018 (1)The pieces of this quilt were constructed in a Terry Aske Circles, Circles, Circles workshop that our guild held on March 22, 2018.  Although Terry taught us the technique, the design is my own.  When I brought the four quarters of the block home from the workshop I almost discarded them as they sure didn’t look like much.  Once I gave them a good press and trimmed up the edges, I could see the potential and when Jackie announced the challenge, I was inspired to finish the piece into a 12 in square miniature quilt.

 

 

STS #3 – Purple Plus – Finished Flimsy

PURPLE PLUS – 65″ x 77″ – May 21, 2018 

Today I finished my purple plus quilt to the flimsy stage.  This top is currently 65″ x 77″ which makes it a nice lap/cuddle size.

This is the third quilt in my STS (Slash the Stash) series and the second purple quilt in that series.

Two quilts that Cora posted on her blog, Carla Quilts were the inspiration for my quilt.  She had made a green colorway and a blue colorway of this same design.  The pattern is from a Modern Plus tutorial by Jeni Baker of In Color Order.

The pattern utilizes 4.5 inch cut squares.  I over cut and so I have a stack of purple squares leftover.  Those squares will likely find a way into a baby quilt at some point in the future.

I am back looking for suitable patterns for the next STS quilt.

Purple Plus – blocks on the design wall

While I was cutting the pieces for my Purple Tempest quilt, I cut the squares for this quilt top.  This is Purple Plus and it will be the third quilt that I am working on in my quest to STS (Slash the Stash).

I got the idea for this quilt from a blog post by Cora Quilts.  This quilt top is made from 4.5″ squares (19 rows of 16 squares each) – using a layout / pattern by Jeni Baker of In Color Order.  This quilt should finish about 64″ x  75″ which should make it a nice lap size.

Currently, this is just squares on my design wall.  Construction of this quilt definitely requires a design wall to lay everything out to make sure your light, medium, and dark fabrics are balanced in placement.  Once I have made my final decision on my layout I can proceed with sewing the blocks together into rows.

STS – #2 – Purple Tempest

Purple Tempest – flimsy – 90″ x 90″

I am continuing with my commitment to use up my “Classic” stash fabrics (or Slash the Stash – STS).  I decided after working on my stack of blues that the next colour that I would work on would be purple.

I finished Purple Tempest tonight to the flimsy stage.  The blocks finish at 9″ square making this top finish at 90″ x 90″.  I used Cherry House’s, Tempest pattern.  I prefer the look of this quilt in solid fabrics but the whole point of this exercise was to use the older more traditional fabrics in my stash which are prints and tone on tones so no solids this time.  If you follow the link to Cherry’s blog you will see this pattern in many different colourways – all of them fabulous.

Scrappy Hexie blocks in orange, purple, grey, teal, and pink

I have been working on my scrappy hexie blocks when I have time.  This is the next group of finished blocks in orange, teal, purple, pink, and grey.

These 18 blocks will be added to the finished block pile which will mean I have a total of 43 finished hexagon blocks.  I will have to see what other colours I might be missing.
