{"id":2029,"date":"2017-06-18T21:17:52","date_gmt":"2017-06-19T04:17:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silverthimble.ca\/blog\/?p=2029"},"modified":"2017-07-02T09:29:56","modified_gmt":"2017-07-02T16:29:56","slug":"starting-a-new-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silverthimble.ca\/blog\/2017\/06\/starting-a-new-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Starting a New Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ever since I saw the &#8220;Family of Three&#8221; pattern in the January\/February 2016 issue of Quiltmaker magazine, it has been on my list to make. \u00a0The quilt is the creation of Canadian quilt designer, <a href=\"https:\/\/sewfreshquilts.blogspot.ca\/2015\/12\/family-of-three-for-quiltmaker-magazine.html\">Lorna McMahon of Sew Fresh Quilts. \u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This project seemed like the perfect first quilt for our grand-baby expected in September since the nursery is a jungle theme and the giraffe is my favorite African animal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/silverthimble.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/QM1602-COVER-500PX.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2034\" src=\"https:\/\/silverthimble.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/QM1602-COVER-500PX-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"QM1602-COVER-500PX\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/silverthimble.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/QM1602-COVER-500PX-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/silverthimble.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/QM1602-COVER-500PX.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Warning: \u00a0There are a ton of tiny pieces to be cut for this quilt. \u00a0I spent most of yesterday at our guild&#8217;s sew in cutting out the pieces. \u00a0The smallest pieces are 1&#8243; square. \u00a0Thankfully there were only a few of them. \u00a0However, there were 215 &#8211; 1.5&#8243; square pieces that had to be cut! \u00a0You need to be organized as you cut out the pieces. \u00a0I had strips of paper labeled with the colour of the fabric, the number of pieces that I needed to cut, the size of the cut piece on them, and the corresponding letter assigned to that piece in the pattern. \u00a0As I cut out each piece, I pinned the piece of paper to the top of the stack of pieces. \u00a0The time taken to organize the pieces as you are cutting will pay off when you go to sew the units together later.<\/p>\n<p>There are some printing errors in the magazine. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.quiltmaker.com\/pattern_correction.html\">If you check the Quiltmaker website, they list the pattern corrections as:\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><em>Family of Three\u00a0(Jan\/Feb &#8217;16)<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"qmbody\" style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><em>The cutting dimensions\u00a0for\u00a0the F patches in the unit 4&#8217;s and unit 5 are\u00a01&#8243; x 5&#8243;.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><em>The cutting dimensions\u00a0for\u00a0the N patches\u00a0in\u00a0the unit 15&#8217;s are missing. The measurements for N are\u00a04-1\/2&#8243; x 9-1\/2&#8243;.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><em>In the assembly diagram one patch was\u00a0mislabelled. In the fourth row of leaves from the top, the patch labelled &#8220;S&#8221; (to the right of &#8220;T&#8221;) should be labelled &#8220;R&#8221;.\u00a0In the cutting list, the dimensions and the amounts for R and S are correct.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><em>The light orange patches labelled &#8220;L&#8221; on the small giraffe are mislabeled. These two patches should be labelled BB. The cutting list under Light Orange Solid should list 6 L&#8217;s (cut 1 1\/2&#8243; x 8 1\/2&#8243;) and 2 BB&#8217;s (1 1\/2&#8243; x 7 1\/2&#8243;).\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong><em>We regret the error.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2032\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a id=\"caption-attachment-2032\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Family of Three &#8211; Assembly Diagram<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although the assembly diagram makes this look like an intimidating project, if you take the time to lay out the units on a design wall and refer to the assembly diagram as you piece the different units, you will have the top completed in no time.<\/p>\n<p>I elected to make the quilt with Kona solids in the colour scheme that the designer used: \u00a0Cedar and Sunny for the giraffes, Cactus, Peapod, and Grass for the leaves and ground\/grass, and Capri for the background. \u00a0There is a small amount of Medium Gray required for the eyes, nostrils, and feet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/silverthimble.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/CEDAR.jpg\"><img
